The UK switch over from Analogue to Digital is UK government policy and will take place between 2008 and 2012. So it's already happening! Digital TV will bring a range of improvements to your television viewing. This will include:
- A larger selection of free Channels to choose from. You can expect to receive anywhere between 40 and 50 Television Channels + DAB Radio Channels depending on where you live.
- A better quality of picture and sound.
- New Features such as on-screen listings, programme guides and interactivity through features like the BBC I-Player. Audio description and increased levels of subtitling are available for those with audio and visual impairment.
- You will still have the option to purchase additional services such as movies and sport from other operators.
Digital TV also uses less broadcast space. This means that after the switch-over there'll be more room for new services such as HDTV, Wireless Broadband and Local programming.
You can choose to view Digital TV in the following three ways:
- Option one is through your aerial. Depending on the age of your aerial it may need alterations or to be replaced altogether. A good guide as to the suitability of your existing aerial is the strength it receives Channel Five in. Itis estimated that as many as 5-10% of rooftop aerials and 50% of set-top aerials will need to be replaced.
- Options two is through a Satellite Dish. A satellite service will offer more choice of channels and greater interactivity. Set-up costs make this a slightly more expensive option. If you live in a listed building or conservation area there may be restrictions on the use of satellite equipment.
- The third option is Fibre Optic (also known as ‘Cable') which in Northern Ireland is limited to the big urban areas. You may also receive your phone and broadband connection through the same provider.

What Equipment Will I Need?
The most important thing to consider when looking at your digital options is your television. If your television has a scart connection it can most likely be compatible for Digital by simply adding a Freeview box. Now though is the perfect time to purchase a television for the future, especially with all the new additional features that will follow the Digital Switch on such as HD (high-definition) and internet widgets.
All the televisions sold at Armagh Electrical.com are digital televisions as opposed to being digitally compatible. This means that a Freeview box is built into the Television. Some televisions such as those in the Panasonic range also have a built-in Freesat box for HD Television.
You should look out for the ‘Digital Tick' logo shown below to give you confidence you are choosing the right products. If you have any further questions please contact us at Armagh Electrical.com or talk to us instore at Dalzell's of Markethill.

What other equipment you'll need will depend on your choice of provider. Sky, Virgin media and BT will typically provide their own equipment. With Freeview, Topup TV and Freesat you'll need a set-top box (or decoder) and a scart lead. For Freesat you'll also require a satellite dish. Armagh Electrical.com and Dalzell's of Markethill have all the equipment you'll need and fully trained professionals to install it. Contact us to discuss your requirements.
Things to Consider
Remember to include all televisions that you'll continue to watch, to ensure they remain functional when the Switch-over comes.
After the Switch-over you'll still be able to use your VHS or analogue DVD recorder but you'll not be able to record one station while watching another. If you'd like to do this you'll need to purchase a new digital recorder and twin scart connection. Information on DVD, HD and Blue Ray recorders is available in our Buyers' Guide.
When Will This Happen For Me?
Northern Ireland is among the last regions to complete the Digital Switch-over along with London, Tyne Tees and Meridian. This doesn't mean you should leave it to the last minute however to ensure you are notleft without a signal. Switching over now means being able to enjoy all the extra channels and services earlier. So don't delay, visit our television section now or talk to us instore at Dalzell's of Markethill.
